The Zeyrek-Fener-Balat route, one of Istanbul’s most characteristic districts, is a unique photography route whose streets still bear the legacy of centuries, each corner harboring a unique story. In this walk, we focus on the direction of light, the balance of colors, and the relationship between people and space in these neighborhoods where historical fabric and daily life intertwine.

This walk is not just a photography tour; it’s also a hands-on workshop that aims to see, notice, and tell stories through photography.

Route:

We begin the day in Zeyrek. As the morning light falls on the stone walls and windows of old houses on the slopes overlooking the Golden Horn, we photograph the balance between the city’s past and present. Here, we engage in short exercises on perspective, depth, and the pursuit of rhythm in architectural details.

The walking route then extends to the streets of Fener. The stone structures, narrow streets, and colorful doors surrounding the Patriarchate offer different shooting opportunities depending on the fluctuations in light throughout the day. Participants share practical exercises with visual examples on topics such as rhythm, repetition, and textural contrast within the frame.

The Balat section is the most colorful and vibrant part of the walk. Renovated house facades, workshops, small shops, children playing in the street, graffiti, and the play of shadows. In this section, participants experience both establishing the relationship between people and space through a documentary photography approach and creating composition through color, balance, and simplicity.

In short breaks, mini-evaluations are held from time to time, where the photographs are discussed and examples of how different perspectives are reflected in the photographs are shared.

Anyone who wants to read Istanbul’s history on walls, doors, and faces, and to walk through these neighborhoods with photographs, where every corner holds a different sense of time, is invited to this expedition.
